International Youth Exchanges

Trips in 2016 and 2017  (Status: 12.7. 2016)

Preliminary remarks:  The extremely favourable value for money of all trips is only possible because of - variably high - public subsidies. Trips Nos. 1 and 4 will be the most highly subsidised. Special requests, e.g. Single rooms are available on request, but subject to an extra supliment.

An overview of the trips with a planned program

1. Trip to Israel-Palestine-Jordan | from 07.-23.10.2016 (16 days)

(Fully-booked since April!)

The planned program

Since the flight schedules to Tel Aviv in October 2017 have not yet been determined, a more detailed program with all program points and the time frame can only be prepared afterwards. The final program will then be worked out together with the participants of the group.

During the entire time, we will have the minibus of the driver Husam Moner at our disposal.

We will spend the nights on a half board basis in monasteries, hostels, Bedouin tents (among others in Kfar Hanokdim, Wadi Rum and Petra), hotels, but also in private accommodation in Palestine, except on 3 evenings.

Number of participants: Maximum 16 (including 2 tour guides)

Services (included in price)

 Outward and return flight from Cologne to Tel Aviv (1 stopover), all trips with minibus (16 seats), bus and public transport during the trip, all entrance fees for sightseeing, national parks etc. (including all guided tours), balloon flight in Wadi Rum

• 14 overnight stays thereof 11 x with half board (see below)
• Travel cancellation insurance (100%) and foreign health insurance

Planned program (We reserve the right to make changes on site)

Multi-day youth exchanges will be held at the international youth exchange centre Tent of Nations (linked) of Daoud Nassar near Bethlehem, in Bethlehem and Ramallah (with 2 school visits), as well as in Jordan (including among others a visit to the SOS Children's Village and Project, with young people of over 16 years of age).

We will conduct projects or workshops on several days (topics still need to be worked out, but which also contain elements of experiential education), with young people in Bethlehem, Ramallah and Aqaba (Jordan).

We will also visit the peace village Neves Shalom, the Christian Kibbutz Nes Ammim (talks with the new head Dr. Tobias Kriener about interreligious dialogue), the Caritas Baby Hospital in Bethlehem (talks about medical care in Palestine), the University of Bethlehem (talks with the German volunteers and students about studies and future perspectives in Palestine), the Israeli settlement Neve Daniel in Palestine, right next to the Tent of Nations (talks with the German Nathanel Boxberg about the Israeli settlement policy) for example.

In Jerusalem, we will visit for example the reformist synagogue Kol HaNeshama (talks with Rabbi Levi Weiman-Kelman), the meeting centre of the Empress-Auguste-Viktoria Foundation (talks with the pastor Gabi Zander and German volunteers), the Dormitio Abbey on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, talks with the German Benedictine Father Ignatius and others, about the position of Christians and the interreligious dialogue in the Holy Land, as well as the Shoah Memorial Yad Vashem.

Further cultural / tourist highlights

1. Israel-Palestine

Tour of the old town of Jerusalem (with guided tour provided by the tour guide), visits for example to Tel Aviv (City tour), Jaffa, Caesarea, Sepphoris (with guide), Haifa (Bahia Garden) Rosh Hanikra (limestone cliffs with water-riddled caves at the Lebanese border), Akko (underground crusader city), Golan Heights (UN blue helmet soldiers at the Syrian border) with Banias (Waterfall + Pan Sanctuary) and trip through geode villages, Sea of Galilee with Christian sites (Tabgha, Capernaum, Mount of Beatitudes etc.), Tiberias with the Jordan baptismal site Yardenit, Jericho (the oldest city in the world, located 300 m below sea level), Qasr El Yahud (the actual baptismal site of Jesus), the Bedouin tent city of Kfar Hanokdim (with camel ride, campfire and Bedouin-music + dance), Eilat on the Red Sea (border with Egypt), Masada (Herod's fortress), Qmran (scrolls from the Dead Sea), En Gedi (botanical garden), Bethlehem (among others Church of the Nativity + Souq), Hebron (Abraham Mosque) and Ramallah (Capital of Palestine)

2. Jordan

Wadi Rum (2-hour camel ride, 4-hour Jeep tour in the footsteps of Laurence of Arabia through the desert + balloon flight, campfire, music and dance with Bedouins), Petra (trek through the ancient Nabataean city, 2 sites of the new 7 Wonders of the World), Aqaba on the Red Sea (Border to Saudi Arabia)

Not included in the price

Pocket money (recommendation): about €300 for lunch, drinks, souvenirs as well as 3 dinners. In addition, gratuities in the amount of €80 will be payable before departure directly to the bus driver in Israel-Palestine and Jordan as well as to the tour guide in Jordan and for new extra-visa fees at the Israeli border crossing Araba to Jordan.

Preparation of the trip

Once the number of participants is established, the detailed program of the trip will be jointly worked out in presumably 3 meetings, including the planned projects (see above). The participants will thereby not only also receive information for example on the history, culture, religion, the current political situation of Israel-Palestine and Jordan, but also on luggage as well as safety instructions and behavioural rules during the trip. The assignment of rooms and the allocation to the host families are regulated as far as possible according to the wishes of the participants.

The last valid version of the program with all dates will be distributed to everyone prior to departure.

Weather and bathing opportunities

In October and early November – except at night and for example in Bethlehem (almost 900 m altitude) – temperatures are still very warm (often over 30 degrees) in the Middle East (especially in the desert), so that we can for example swim and snorkel in the Mediterranean in Tel Aviv (10 km long sandy beach), in the Sea of Galilee, perhaps also in the Jordan, in the Dead Sea (Qmran) and the Red sea (Aqaba and Eilat).

2. Trip to Crete | presumably from 8 to 21.04. 2017 (14 days)

The planned program

Since the flight schedules to Heraklion for April 2017 have not yet been determined a more detailed program with all program points and time frame can only be prepared afterwards. The final program will then be worked out together with the participants of the group.

We will carry out various creative projects (for example, music, theatre, and dance) with the youth group "Be pArt" in Heraklion with the help of trained Greek specialists.

This will subsequently be followed by the experiential education part of the trip to different locations of Crete, in the form of projects (adventure and terrain games, however also games in suitable interior spaces), as well as hikes etc. probably with a trained experiential educator.

The goal of these projects is to confront young people with real physical, mental and social challenges, in order to support them in their personality development and to enable them to responsibly take control of their own life.

Number of participants: At least 18, maximum 20 (including 2 tour guides)

Services (included in price)

 Outward and return flight from Cologne to Heraklion, bus transfer from the airport to the hotel and vice versa, all trips with minibus (20 seats) and buses, all entrance fees, in the case of sightseeing, national parks, ship excursions as well as guided tours in Knossos and in the archaeological museum of Heraklion

 13 overnight stays in hotels (9 x with half board, see below), thereof presumably 5 overnight stays in Heraklion, 3 overnight stays in Agios Nikolaos, 2 overnight stays in Chania, 2 overnight stays in Matala, 1 overnight stay in Agia Roumeli (Samariá Gorge)

 Adventure tours and sightseeing (among others Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos, with Elounda and Peninsula Spinalonga), caves of Matala, palm beach Vai, Byzantine church Panegia i Kera, Svendoni stalactite cave / Dikti Cave, Minoan Palace of Phaistos, Krasi (thickest plane tree in Europe), lake Kournas, Preveli monastery, the beach at Moni Preveli (with palm forest along the river Megalopotamos) Gortis, Agia Triada, excursion to the island Chrisi or Gavdos, about 7-hour and 16km long hike from Omalós downwards into the Samariá Gorge (only possible if the gorge is already accessible)

Pocket money (recommendation): about €260 for lunch, drinks, souvenirs etc. In addition, payable directly before departure is €100 for the creative project leaders (music, dance, theatre etc.), gratuities for the bus driver (+ overnight stay) + 4 dinners (without drinks).

Optional: Folklore night, for example in the traditional village of Karouzos (about €30)

Once the number of participants is established, the detailed program of the trip will be jointly worked out in presumably 3 meetings, including the planned projects (see above).

The participants will also receive information for example about the history, culture, religion, and the current political situation of Greece but also of course about the luggage and room assignment.

The last valid version of the program with all dates will be distributed to all prior to departure.

Weather and bathing opportunities

It is probably already quite warm in Crete in April (20-25 degrees), so that bathing should also be possible on the highly diverse beaches along the Mediterranean.

3. Trip to Rome | from 15. to 22.07.2017 (8 days)

The planned program

Since the flight schedules to Rome for July 2017 have not yet been determined a more detailed program with all program points and time frame can only be prepared afterwards. The final program will then be worked out together with the participants of the group.

We will carry out multi-day projects or workshops (topics still need to be worked out, but will also include experiential education elements) with members of the youth organisation "Meta cooperativa sociale onlus" in Rome.

Experiential education projects will also be carried out at the campsite "Internazionale di Castelfusano", where we are housed in bungalows (see below).

In addition, we will, of course, together with the Italian youths - under the guidance of the city guide Valentina Fazio, take a sightseeing tour of central cultural monuments or Rome and its surroundings.

Number of participants: At least 18, maximum 22 (including 2 tour guides)

Services (included in price)

• Outward and return flight from Cologne to Rome, transfer from the airport to the campsite and vice versa, all trips with buses, metro etc. in Rome and surrounding area, all guided tours with the guide, entrance fees at museums or tourist attractions, cruise on the Tiber etc.
• 7 nights stays in bungalows (mostly 4-6 persons) at Internazionale di Castelfusano (near Ostia, directly on the Mediterranean beach), without breakfast or other meals (self-catering)
• Guided tours with a German-speaking tour guide Valentina Fazio, guided tour "Ancient Rome" (Colosseum, Arch of Constantine, the Roman Forum, the Capitol, 3 hours), tour of St. Peter's Square and Basilica (3 hours), walk to Castel Sant'Angelo, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain up to the famous Spanish Steps (3 hours), papal audience at the St. Peter's Square (Only possible on Wednesdays and only if the Pope is residing in Rome), guided tour of Ostia Antica (2 hours), excursion to Tivoli (Villa D'Este + Villa Adriana) , 40-minute guided tour of the Callistus catacombs, as well as the possibility of a boat trip on the Tiber and a visit to the large synagogue with museum

Not included in the price

Pocket money (recommendation): about € 250 pocket money for lunch, 5 x dinners, drinks and souvenirs. In addition, payable directly before departure, are gratuities in the amount of € 100 for the guide Valentina Fazio + bus driver and for 2 barbecues at the campsite.

Preparation of the trip

Once the number of participants is established, the detailed program of the trip will be jointly worked out in presumably 3 meetings, including the planned projects (see above). The participants will not only also receive information about for example the history, culture, religion, as well as the current political situation of Italy, but also about the luggage and the assignment of the group to the bungalows (if possible according to the wishes of the participants).

The last valid version of the program with all dates will be distributed to all, prior to departure.

Weather

It is presumably very warm in Rome in July (often over 30 degrees), so that daily bathing in the Mediterranean is possible (up to about 9 pm).

4. Trip to Israel-Palestine-Jordan | presumably from 20.10. to 05.11.2017
